Banned Books Week

Noting Banned Books Week last week, the GLHS Library created a display of the books that we possess that are commonly challenged, and I lectured in classrooms on issues of Intellectual Freedom, the First Amendment, censorship, and banned books. A book truck full of some our banned book examples accompanied me to the classrooms, which, in theory, allows the kids to check out the books for themselves. And while the books were fondled and examined by some, none were actually circulated, so despite my efforts and intentions, our statistics failed to improve.

Overall, it was an informative, interactive session (save for the 1st hour kids, who were largely unresponsive): the students submitted questions in advance, and they had plenty of others during the talks as well.
